Dr. Dirk Müller-Wieland is Professor of Medicine, Head of the Clinical Research Center, Department of Medicine at the University Hospital RWTH Aachen. He studied medicine in Hamburg followed by a two year postdoctoral research fellowship at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, USA.
His clinical training in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism he received at the Universities of Hamburg and Cologne. 1997 he became Associate Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology at the University in Cologne and was Chair for Clinical Pathobiochemistry at the University of Düsseldorf and Director at the German Diabetes
Center from 2001‐2006.
Before his current position, he was Director of the Department of Medicine and Head of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the Asklepios Hospital St. Georg in Hamburg and Dean of the Asklepios Campus Hamburg of Semmelweis University 2012‐2014.
His current clinical and scientific interests are metabolism‐related cardiovascular risk factors and there clinical implications for cardiovascular prevention. Since 2015 he is Executive Director of the International Task Force for Prevention of Cardiometabolic Diseases and currently acting President of the German Diabetes Association. In respect of digital transformation in the medical world, he is interested in the role of medical associations for public health policies and their impact for research, care and prevention of chronic diseases,
like diabetes mellitus. Recently, he initiated a “Code of Conduct Digital Health” for the German Diabetes Association.
