Prof. Dominik T. Matt, PhD

Dominik T. Matt is a Full Professor for Manufacturing Engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology at the Free University of Bolzano and Head of Fraunhofer Italia Research in Bolzano, the first research center of Fraunhofer in Italy.

He studied Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and earned a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). In 1998, he started working as research project manager for an IT company in Boston (MA), USA, where he developed a template model for the fast configuration of supply chain software. In 1999, he entered the Research and Engineering Center of the BMW Group in Munich, where he worked on different R&D projects in leading positions, in Germany and in the UK. In 2004, he was appointed to the post of a Professor for Manufacturing Systems and Technology in the Department of Production Systems and Business Economics at the Polytechnic University of Turin (Politecnico di Torino), Italy. In 2008, he accepted a call of the Free University of Bolzano to a tenured professorship at the Faculty of Science and Technology, where he holds the Chair of Manufacturing Engineering and heads the research area “Industrial Engineering &

Automation (IEA)” with 12 professors and numerous post-doc and PhD students. Prof. Matt focuses primarily on the areas of Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory, Lean and Agile Production, on the planning and optimization of assembly processes and systems, as well as on organizational and technical aspects of in-house logistics.

Prof. Matt is also Head of Fraunhofer Italia Research in Bolzano with about 40 engineering scientists doing applied research in the field of the Industrial Internet (Industrie 4.0). He is member in numerous national and international scientific organizations and advisory boards. He has published more than 150 scientific papers and book contributions and is a frequently invited speaker at international conferences. For more information, please explore:
