After finishing her degree in Biology in Lisbon, Portugal, Sara obtained her PhD in Developmental Biology at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR)/ University

College London (UCL) in 2004, after which she moved to New York’s Kimmel Center for Biology and Medicine at the Skirball Institute/NYU Medical Center, joining the Developmental Genetics Department as a postdoctoral researcher. After becoming a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Research Associate, she moved to Barcelona in 2011 with a Career Track Fellowship to establish her own research lines, on the principles of global single cell population behavior and on cell biology of germ cells during development. As well as her career track award, she received a Marie Curie Actions Career Integration Grant from the EU in 2012 and also two project grants from Spain’s Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad in 2013 and 2015, as project leader, to develop her research. She is author of several scientific publications and a member of a number of evaluation and advisory committees and associations, including the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA), where she is as a founding member of the Portugal- Spain chapter and an active Science Policy working group member. More recently, Sara has co- founded and is the managing director and editor of Owlwrite, a scientific editing and consultancy service.
