Dr. Gerald Santucci, PhD

Dr. Santucci worked in the European Commission Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT, formerly DG XIII and then DG INFSO), first as an Expert in the RACE programme (from 10 February 1986), then as an Official (from 16 November 1988 to 30 June 2017).

From 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017 he performed the function of Adviser for Cross- cutting Policy/Research Issues, with focus on Knowledge Management, integration of Research/Innovation and Policy, and Data for Policy.

Previously he was Head of the Unit “Knowledge Sharing” (2012-2016) and Head of the Unit “Networked Enterprise & Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)” (2006-2012). He managed the elaboration of a Communication on RFID (adopted by EC on 15/03/2007), a Recommendation on RFID Privacy and Security Aspects (adopted 12/05/2009) and a Communication on the Internet of Things (adopted 18/06/2009). From September 2010 to June 2012, he chaired the IoT Expert Group, composed of about 40 members from Government, Industry, and Civil Society, which addressed issues of IoT Identification, Architectures, Privacy and Security, Ethics, Standards, and Governance.

Dr. Santucci gained extensive experience in the activities of the Directorate-General through his involvement in research management, including heading the Unit “Applica- tions relating to Administrations” (i.e. eGovernment) 1999-2002, the Unit “Trust and

Security” 2003, and the Unit “eBusiness” 2004-2006. Dr. Santucci is recognized for his work on AIM Exploratory Action (Advanced Informatics in Medicine), launched in Feb- ruary 1989 under the RACE programme (R&D on Advanced Communications Technolo- gies for Europe) – today “ICT for Health”.

Dr. Santucci consults on Internet of Things, RFID, Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence, team management, technology watch, socio-economic analysis, strategy and opera- tional management.
